Sterling Silver Care Cleaning Instructions
We recommend polishing your Sterling Silver Jewelry every 2 to 3 months if it is frequently worn, and every 6 months if it is infrequently used, to prevent tarnish.
Why does Sterling Silver Jewelry tarnish?
Sterling silver tarnishes because the copper added to strengthen the silver reacts with sulfur and moisture in the air, creating silver sulfide. The 7.5% copper in 925 sterling silver reacts with sulfur in the atmosphere to form a black or dark grey layer. This oxidation process is accelerated by exposure to chemicals (lotions, perfumes, bleach), humidity, perspiration, and, in some cases, chlorine.
How to keep the Shine
We highly recommend Wright’s by WEIMAN silver cream. It is widely available at major national retailers, including Walmart, The Home Depot, Amazon, and several large grocery chains. It is typically sold in 8-oz jars and is frequently stocked in the cleaning or household aisles. Wright's Silver Cream is a highly effective, ammonia-free cleaner and polish that removes deep tarnish, restores shine, and leaves a protective, anti-tarnish coating on silver, jewelry, and metals.
We suggest using a toothbrush when applying the cream to your sterling silver jewelry, and you will also need a professional polishing cloth to complete the process. The cloth has an inner layer (often white) treated with polishing compounds to remove tarnish, while the outer layer (often grey) is untreated for final polishing and buffing. The items needed are fairly inexpensive and will keep your jewelry beautiful, preserving the silver metal's brilliant luster for many years to come.
